Other Labeling Issues
Meat and poultry products may bear a variety of labels to inform consumers about the contents of the package. All pre-packaged meat and poultry products carry ingredient statements and multi-ingredient products are also required to carry nutrition labeling.
The Food Safety and
Inspection Service (FSIS) regulates the
labeling of meat and poultry products. In
addition to features required on meat and
poultry product labels (e.g. USDA inspection
legend, net contents, etc.), FSIS also approves
voluntary labeling statements such as,
“grass-fed,” and “organic,” so long as the
information is truthful and considered
non-misleading.
