For those who work in the food service industry and witness the bounty of the food supply in the United States, it can be difficult to imagine the extent of hunger in America. But hunger is a growing domestic problem, with 35 million Americans in need of food assistance. The nation’s charitable feeding system, led by Feeding America, is seeing an increased demand for nutritious, healthy food. Meating the Need
In 1989, the American Meat Institute (AMI) formed the Meating the Need partnership with Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization, which serves 25 million people annually. Through this partnership, companies donate surplus meat and poultry to Feeding America food banks nationwide. In the past two years, AMI member have donated more than 33 million pounds of meat and poultry products to food banks, putting valuable protein foods on the tables of America's hungry.

Companies that donate to Feeding America support the nation's largest hunger-relief organization. Food and product donations to Feeding America are tax-deductible. Members of the Feeding America network exceed the highest food safety and storage standards, ensuring that donations remain safe all the way to the table. Feeding America is the most efficient network of hunger-relief charities. In 2007, Forbes magazine gave Feeding America a 98% charitable commitment rating. This means that 98% of donations to Feeding America go directly to feeding hungry people.
